Pretoria – North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has handed over bulls to livestock farmers in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District as part of that province’s Sire Subsidy Scheme.

The Premier gave farmers in Modimola village, outside Mahikeng, 10 Bonsmara and 10 Brahman bulls on Tuesday.

The stud bulls are meant to improve the quality and reproductive rates of the beneficiary farmers’ livestock, while contributing to their efficiency in livestock management.

“We have consciously prioritised agriculture as one of the anchor economic pillars in our province and distributing stud bulls to subsistence farmers signifies our strategic intent to position [the province] as the best in beef production and farmer development.

“This delivery represents the Provincial Government’s swift and integrated approach to implement the Setsokotsane Programme objectives, which are about stepping up the delivery of services at all local municipalities in the province,” he said.

Premier Mahumapelo launched the Setsokotsane Programme last Friday at Montshioa sports ground in Mahikeng.

The programme seeks to align the Integrated Development Plans of municipalities with the Annual Performance Plans of the provincial departments and position municipalities as drivers of service delivery.

Kesolofetse Motshegare, a woman farmer from Lokgalong village who received a Bonsmara bull, applauded the intervention by the provincial government.

She said the intervention will enable them to participate favourably in the value-chain and economic growth of the province.

In Ngaka Modiri Molema District, a total of 105 subsistence livestock farmers will benefit from the Sire Subsidy Scheme this financial year.

Premier Mahumapelo also handed over 300 dust bins (240-litre wheel-bins) to Danville township communities for domestic waste management. - SAnews.gov.za
