Pretoria - Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi has condemned the reported taxi violence incidents in Mamelodi and Reiger Park, which have left several taxi association members dead.

This follows the recent brutal killings of Oscar Letsoalo and two other members of the Mamelodi Taxi Association, and members of the Reiger Park Taxi Association.

Letsoalo was also the chairperson of the Mamelodi Business Revitalisation Forum, which aims to ensure that business opportunities are created for the people of Mamelodi.

“The taxi industry and the greater Mamelodi community have lost a leader, a friend and a dedicated activist,” said MEC Vadi.

In the statement, MEC Vadi also requested police to act swiftly in arresting perpetrators of the crimes.

MEC Vadi’s department has also pledged to work with the leadership of the taxi associations, community organisations and the SA Police Service to bring an end to the growing incidence of taxi violence in the province.

MEC Vadi said his department will put in place measure, in terms of Section 91 of the National Land Transport Act, to curb the violence and bring a semblance of order and safety within the taxi industry and the surrounding communities.

He also sent his condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. - SAnews.gov.za
