Labour laws road shows draw to an end

Thursday, March 5, 2015

Pretoria - The month-long labour laws road shows, which drew thousands of stakeholders from government, business and organised labour across the country, will end tomorrow.

The last event is scheduled to take place in Pretoria.

The event, to be attended by the top brass of the Department of Labour and Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), will focus on the changes that followed the signing of several amendments to labour laws into law by the President at the beginning of the year.

The labour laws in question that were recently reviewed, and are now in force, include the Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Act (BCEA), the Labour Relations Amendment Act, the Employment Equity Amendment Act and the Employment Services Act (no 4 of 2014) assented and gazetted on 7th April 2014.

The amendments are in response to increased informalisation of labour and are to ensure that vulnerable categories of workers receive adequate protection and are employed in conditions of decent work.

These amendments are meant to enhance the effectiveness of the primary labour market institutions such as the Labour Court, the CCMA, the Essential Services Committee and the labour inspectorate. It aims to strengthen the implementation of Employment Equity and enhance equal treatment in the workplace and re-positioning the public employment service.

Addressing dozens of enthusiastic stakeholders in Rustenburg, North West Province, last Thursday, Martin Ratshivhanda from the department’s Public Employment Services said the department was well placed to champion the registration and placement of work-seekers as it was “Close to the heartbeat of the labour market”.

The last road show, scheduled for Pretoria tomorrow, will start at 09:00 and end at 13:00 at the CSIR Conference Centre in Meiring Naude Road in Pretoria. – SAnews.gov.za
