Pretoria - Government has congratulated swimmer Kevin Paul for winning South Africa’s first gold medal at the Paralympics currently underway in Rio, Brazil.

Paul won the country’s first medal with a strong finish in 1min,04.86sec and has paved the way for South Africa’s medal chase.

In a statement on Friday, acting Director General of Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) Donald Liphoko said last night’s winning performance shows that the price of success is self-determination, hard work and dedication.

“Government congratulates our sporting star on his amazing performance. Your achievement is testament to your dedication to the Paralympic spirit. We are rallying behind you and other South African participants at the Rio Games,” said Liphoko.

Government encouraged South Africans to use the power of social media to congratulate Paul on his success and to support and encourage the rest of the team participating at the Rio Paralympics.

In 2008, Paul took gold at the Beijing Paralympic games.
