Kay Motsepe School Cup kicks off in Soweto

Pretoria - The Kay Motsepe School Cup National Championships will kick off on Tuesday at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto campus.

The Schools Cup is part of the joint school sport programme that was launched in April this year by the Department of Basic Education and the Motsepe Foundation. 

The 2016 Edition, which will see 18 school football teams compete for the National title, with 36 netball teams battling it out for top national honours.

The schools’ football challenge is regarded as having the largest prize money in the world for any school football tournament with the winning school receiving R1 million from a total annual prize money of R3.4 million.

Netball winners will travel to Singapore as part of the prize where they will compete in an International Netball Tournament.

The Football version of the championships is in its 12th Edition of the tournament and it will take place in Johannesburg from 4 – 8 October 2016. The Netball games will commence a day later and the ladies will compete from 5 - 8 October 2016.

All the games will commence at 8am daily.

The fixture lists, venues and names of participating schools will be posted on the website of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Motsepe Foundation, South African Football Association (SAFA) and South African School Netball (SASN). – SAnews.gov.za
