GCE pleased with judgment in 'witchcraft killing' case

Pretoria - The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has expressed satisfaction on the conviction and judgement meted out to the perpetrators who horrendously murdered a grandmother and her four children in Sigubu village in Qhokana, Ngqeleni, in the Eastern Cape last year.

The GCE commended the judgment by Judge Lusindiso Pakade at the Mthatha High Court, saying it will serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators.

"The suitable and prompt legal address to such heinous acts of violence sparked by allegations of witchcraft is what is required to douse the raging fire of 'witchcraft killings' in the province.

"The Commission strongly condemns the murdering of elderly women in the rural areas of Eastern Cape," it said, adding that such gross acts of gender based violence fuelled gender inequality in the province.

The GCE said the legal precedent set in this case was a noteworthy step in the attainment of a society free from the scourge of gender based violence.
