Pretoria - Eskom’s Limpopo Operating Unit has been awarded the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Best Supportive Organisation for 2016.

“Eskom’s Limpopo Operating Unit has been honoured by the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which recognised the power utility as its Best Supportive Organisation for 2016,” said the power utility on Sunday.

The award, presented by Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Head of Department Jacqueline Maisela, acknowledged the educational initiatives Eskom embarked on in the agriculture sector. This in relation to the fight against electricity theft in the province and creating increased awareness on the impact of the crime on South Africa’s economy.

The initiative, which Eskom rolled out through its Operation Khanyisa campaign, did not only educate farmers and workers in the agriculture sector about the dangers and impact of electricity theft, but also encouraged the community to report perpetrators of this crime to the 32211 tip-off line.

Eskom’s Customer Services Manager in Limpopo, Hilton Rampedi, said the power utility is honoured to receive the award.

“Electricity theft is not a victimless crime. In addition to the revenue loss suffered by Eskom and municipalities, there are also lives involved as people continue to be killed and injured as a result of dangerous illegal connections. Despite this, electricity theft remains one of the least reported crimes in South Africa.”

Rampedi appealed to the public to play a more active role in the fight against electricity theft. – SAnews.gov.za
