Department probes food poisoning at Ekurhuleni school

Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that 82 pupils from Tholulwazi Secondary School, in Ekurhuleni, were this morning treated at Pholosong Hospital after a suspected food poisoning outbreak.

“The learners from different grades of the school were brought to the hospital around 9:30am this morning after complaining of stomach aches and diarrhoea,” the department said in a statement on Friday.

According to teachers, these learners ate samp with brown beans, cabbage and butternut from the school’s feeding scheme the previous day.

“The hospital is currently treating some learners while others have since been discharged .To date, no learners have been admitted at the hospital.”

The infection control team from the hospital visited the school this morning and samples of the consumed food were collected and sent for testing at the National Health Laboratory Services.

The department said the results will be released in due course. – SAnews.gov.za
