Pretoria - The world renowned spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has cancelled his planned trip to South Africa, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said on Thursday.

Following the cancellation of the planned visit, the department said it now considers the matter to be closed.

“The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has received written confirmation from the office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama in India indicating that His Holiness has cancelled his planned visit to South Africa,” spokesperson Clayson Monyela said.

The department had earlier confirmed that it received a visa application from the office of the Dalai Lama, which the department said will be taken through the normal due processes and communicated to the applicant thereafter.

The spiritual leader was scheduled to attend the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Cape Town, next month. – SAnews.gov.za
