Pretoria - Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane on Friday published the draft reviewed Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining and Minerals Industry 2016 in the Government Gazette for public comment.

“The draft reviewed charter seeks to, inter alia, strengthen the efficacy of the Mining Charter developed in terms of section 100 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act No 28 of 2002) (MPRDA), as one of the tools for effecting meaningful transformation of the South African mining and minerals industry,” the Department of Mineral Resources said in a statement.

It further seeks to integrate government’s transformation policies and legislation in order to enhance the ease of doing business, create regulatory clarity, predictability and certainty.

“In this regard the reviewed Mining Charter is aligned to the provisions of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act, 2003 (Act No. 53 of 2003) and the Codes of Good Practice (DTI Codes),” the department said.

The department has invited interested and affected parties to submit written inputs and comments as per the Gazette notice, no later than 31 May. – SAnews.gov.za
