Pretoria- A 23-year-old man who is believed to have been responsible for at least eight incidents of house robberies and rape in Polokwane, is appearing in court, today.

David Mamvura was arrested on Sunday in a flat in the central part of Polokwane after police received information about his whereabouts.

The Hammer Man, as he became known as, was first arrested more than a year ago after he allegedly broke into the house of an elderly couple in Bodenstein Street.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi he threatened them with a knife and raped the 76-year-old woman and fled after taking two cell phones.

The suspect was at the time arrested and appeared in court in August 2013 but was released on bail of R2000.

Mulaudzi said Mamvura paid bail but never returned to court for his appearances, resulting in police launching a search for him once again.

“He has already been linked to nine cases of housebreaking and rape in the city and the possibility that even more incidents might be added, is still being investigated.”

He allegedly broke into the house of a couple in Bayman Street during August of 2012. It is believed he severely assaulted a man with a hammer before raping the wife and fleeing with two cell phones.

In another incident, which took place in Eduan Park in Du Plessis Street during October 2012, the suspect apparently broke into a garden flat at the back of a house and tied up a 22-year-old woman before raping her and fleeing with a television, laptop and two cell phones. –SAnews.gov.za
