Ouattara sees no signs after calling for strike in Cote d'Ivoire

Abidjan - The call for a general strike in Cote d'Ivoire by Alassane Ouattara to press his rival Laurent Gbagbo to leave power failed to materialise on Monday in the economic capital Abidjan, where normal life went on as usual.

In the populous district of Youpougon, the boutiques and other businesses were opened, while taxis and mini-cars continued to run in the streets.

Operations in the Abidjan Transport Company were normal, carrying passengers across the city.

In the Plateau district, which is the administrative and business hub, nothing special was witnessed with businesses and offices opened as usual.

Within the administrative city, which hosts many of the public services, officials reported to their offices on schedule.

Ouattara, the president-elect according to the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) and the international community, had called on the people not to turn up in their offices until his rival Gbagbo, who was declared president by the Constitutional Council, leaves office.
