Government lends helping hand to protectors’ families

Pretoria - The Limpopo Provincial Government has set up an inter-ministerial team to support the families of Sergeants Lawrence Lentsoane and Lesiba Sekele.

The two protectors died on Sunday in the crash that claimed the life of Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane.

The inter-ministerial team, led by Acting MEC for Education Jerry Ndou, will assist the Lentsoane and Sekele families with logistical arrangements related to the two men’s burial.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday announced that Lentsoane and Sekele will be given official funerals.

Limpopo MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana and other MECs will attend Lentsoane and Sekele’s funerals. Lentsoane will be laid to rest on Saturday at Vlakplaas Ga-Marishane. Sekele will be buried be at Ga-Mapangula in Mashashane on Sunday.

Minister Chabane, who will be given an Official Funeral Category 1, will be laid to rest on Saturday at Xikundu village in Malamulele in Limpopo.

Official Funeral Category 1 is reserved for serving Ministers, Speaker of the National Assembly, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and Premiers of provinces.  

Books of condolences have been placed at various points across the country and members of the public are invited to write their messages. A condolence book is available in Limpopo at the Office of the Premier, 40 Hans van Rensburg Street, Mowaneng Building.
