Ivory Coast through to Afcon quarter finals

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Pretoria- Ivory Coast booked themselves a place in the quarter finals when they beat Tunisia 3-0 in an exciting African Cup of Nations clash in Rustenburg on Saturday night.

Two late goals from Yaya Toure and Didier Konan ensured the Ivorians ticket after they dominated the entire first half.

Despite being outplayed, Tunisia fought well throughout the match but their attempt to pressure the Ivorians towards the end of the game simply didn't work. Surprisingly, the win for Ivory Coast came as their top striker and sensational international star, Didier Drogba, was put on the bench by coach Sabri Lamouchi.

The win made the Elephants the first team to reach the quarter finals in the tournament. Gervinho opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he too took advantage of a slumbering Tunisian defence.

The win gives the Elephants six points in Group D, while Togo and Tunisia have three each. This means Togo just needs a draw against Tunisia to advance to the quarter finals.

But it's not all lost for the Tunisians as they can still qualify provided that they win their final Group D match against Togo on Wednesday. But they will also have to pray that the results in other groups favour them. -SAnews.gov.za
