Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will lead a South African delegation to the 21st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly.

The summit, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, coincides with the historic 50th anniversary Celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity/ African Union.

The theme of the summit is “Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance”.

“The summit is expected to review key interventions on peace and security, the implementation of NEPAD projects, the African Peer Review Mechanism, the Third Strategic Plan of the AU Commission and the AU Budget for 2014,” Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) spokesperson Clayson Monyela said.

The summit, he added, was expected to “take stock of the challenges and achievements of the Organisation over the past 50 years, and to look at a conceptual framework for Vision 2063 – a view of Africa in the next 50 years.”

President Zuma will be supported by the Dirco Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who is already in Addis Ababa to participate in the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU, which is, amongst others, discussing the draft budget for the 2014 financial year, the implementation of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa and the situation in Western Sahara, the Middle East and Palestine.
