Pretoria – South Africa is concerned about the political developments in the Republic of Turkey following the attempted coup by a faction of the military on Friday.
“South Africa strongly condemns any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means or the resolution of political disagreements through the use of force.
“This incident is a serious violation of Turkey's constitution,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said on Saturday.
International reports say at least 265 people were killed, with some 6 000 people having been detained.
“South Africa supports democracy and the rule of law and we are of the firm view that the will of the people must be respected,” the department said.
The South African government appealed to the people and all political leaders in Turkey to refrain from any violent activities that may further undermine peace, security and stability in that country.
“We urge all involved to adhere to non-violence and to debate issues in a peaceful and inclusive manner,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za
