Pretoria- International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister, Luwellyn Landers, is leading a South African delegation to a two-day summit to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Group of 77 (G77).
The summit, which ends today, is being held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia,
The G77 is a United Nations (UN) coalition of developing nations. It was founded on 15 June 1964.
The group, the largest intergovernmental organisation of developing countries in the UN, is aimed at promoting collective economic interests and gaining leverage within the international community.
“As a member of the G77 and China, South Africa participates in the work of the group to ensure its strength, unity and cohesion in pursuance of the vision of a fair and equitable multilateral system,” departmental spokesperson Clayson Monyela said on Saturday.
Although the members of the G77 have increased to 133 countries, including China as the associate member, the original name was retained due to its historic significance.
It provides the means for countries of the South to promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the UN system and promote South-South cooperation. – SAnews.gov.za
