Regional security tops SADC summit agenda

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will lead a South African government delegation to the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Double Troika.

The meeting will be held in Gaborone, Botswana, on Monday, the Department of International relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said on Thursday.

“It is expected that the Extraordinary Summit will consider the political and security situation in the SADC [Southern African Development Community] region, paying particular attention to the situation in the Kingdom of Lesotho,” DIRCO said.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will take part in the Extraordinary Summit in his capacity as the SADC-appointed facilitator working on the political and security situation in Lesotho.

The South African delegation will also include DIRCO Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as well as State Security Minister David Mahlobo.

South Africa is participating in the meeting in its capacity as the outgoing chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The Double Troika is made up of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania. – SAnews.gov.za
