Iran to name street in capital city after Mandela

Sunday, December 8, 2013

Tehran – Head of the Tehran City Council, Ahmad Masjed-Jameie, said a street in Tehran will be named after former South African President Nelson Mandela in his honour.

The council will choose the street in Iran's capital city and name it
'Nelson Mandela' to remember the anti-apartheid icon, who had lived a life of long struggles against ignorance, said Ahmad.

Mandela passed away at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

He became one of the world's most beloved statesmen and a colossus of the 20th century after emerging from 27 years in prison to negotiate an end to white minority rule in South Africa.

As South Africa's first black President, the ex-boxer and lawyer paved the way to racial reconciliation with forgiveness.

The African National Congress (ANC) has encouraged all South Africans, the continent and the world to observe the National Day of Prayer and Reflection for the family of Mandela.

The national prayer day, which is set for today, forms part of the 10-day national mourning announced by South African President Jacob Zuma in honour of the iconic and revered international statesman.

The national officials of the ANC will observe this important day by attending religious services throughout the country. - SAnews.gov.za-IRNA-NNN-Bernama
