Khartoum - Sudan has received a grant of US$5 million from the World Bank for the improvement of public finance management at the state level in four states -- Red Sea, River Nile, Sennar and North Kordofan.
Sudanese Finance and Economic Planning Minister Badr-Eddin Mahmoud Abbas signed the grant agreement on Monday on behalf of the government of Sudan, while the Bank's Director for Sudan and South Sudan, Caroline Turki, signed for the World Bank.
The project is to be funded from the Sudan multi-donor fund being administered by the World Bank, with funding coming from the British Department for International Development and a Norwegian aid agency.
It aims to develop the efficiency and the accounting of public finance management, and to improve transparency systems in the management of public money so corruption can be reduced.
Sudan’s Finance Minister said the project would enable the four selected states to gain valuable experience in public finance management to enable Sudan to address the challenges associated with economic transformation.
He said Britain's International Development Office had been working in Sudan for a long time and affirmed Sudan's commitment to its contributions with development partners, while calling for the writing off of Sudan foreign debt. – SAnews.gov.za-NNN-SUNA
