Zuma opens road linking Giyani, Polokwane

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Sebayeng - President Jacob Zuma has officially unveiled the R81 road, which links the rural town of Giyani and the city of Polokwane, near Mankweng in Limpopo on Tuesday.

After the unveiling, the President, along with Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, led a roadblock aimed at rooting out unroadworthy vehicles, checking licence discs, driver’s licences and permits on public transport vehicles.

The fully completed R81 shortens travelling time and reduces the cost of doing business between Polokwane and Giyani, which is not far from the Kruger National Park.

The unveiling of the road is part of government’s programme of rolling out infrastructure projects.

Since 2005, South Africa annually observes October as Transport Month. This year, the theme is ‘Celebrating 20 years of delivering efficient, reliable and safe transport services’.

The month is used to raise awareness on the important role of transport in the economy and to encourage participation from civil society and business. It also puts impetus on the provision of a safe, affordable, accessible and reliable transport system in the country.

The month is also used to showcase progress made in various transport programmes and projects. - SAnews.gov.za
