Zuma calls for calm, unity around xenophobic threats

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has appealed to South Africans as well as foreign nationals to unite and work together to isolate and report to the police any xenophobic threats.

The Presidency is concerned about reports that some foreign nationals may be fleeing the country due to fears of possible xenophobic attacks.

He urged South Africans and foreign nationals to report those elements who may be seeking to sow mayhem in communities.

The President reminded South Africans of the warm, peace-loving and hospitable character they showed during 2010 FIFA World Cup.

"The support provided to Ghana and other African soccer teams was impressive and demonstrated African unity in its true sense.

"This spirit must continue to prevail in our country. Let us isolate all elements who may have sinister agendas, who may want to create havoc and sow pain and destruction in communities, especially foreign nationals residing in our country. We appeal for calm, tolerance and unity amongst all," Zuma said.

The police and other law enforcement agencies are doing everything in their power to attend to the situation.
