Pretoria - Zanoxolo Wayile has been appointed to serve as the new Mayor for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

Spokesperson for the municipality, Kupido Baron, said Wayile would take over the reigns from Nondumiso Maphazi who stepped down earlier this week after serving as mayor since 2006.

Baron said the municipality's council had held a vote on the matter earlier on Wednesday and decided that Wayile should be appointed to the post.

The council also decided that Bicks Ndoni should be appointed Deputy Mayor, to replace Nancy Sihlwayi, and Helen Sauls-August be appointed as Speaker of the Council.

Wayile is currently the Chairperson of Cosatu in the Eastern Cape region and the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) representative in the same province.
