Pretoria – Stakeholders in the water sector are thrashing out challenges facing the industry at a three-day workshop in Johannesburg.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation is hosting the workshop to gain a better understanding of the dynamics in the sector. The workshop, which started on 14 September, brings together stakeholders from the Water Research Commission, National Planning Commission, Chamber of Mines and the South African Local Government Association, among others.

Committee chairperson Mlungisi Johnson said the gathering is meant to facilitate talks that can come up with workable solutions to the country’s water and sanitation challenges.

“This is so they can engage in meaningful discussions and collectively find solutions to the backlogs,” said Johnson.

Other issues that will be looked at, Johnson said, include water resources planning, infrastructure development and management, water conservation and demand management.

The workshop is being held under the theme ‘Water at the centre of job creation, poverty eradication and eradication of inequality’. It will conclude today. - SAnews.gov.za
