Pretoria - As part of Women’s Month activities, female law enforcement officers conducted road operations in the Free State on Wednesday.
Officers from the South African Police Service‚ the National Traffic Police (NTP)‚ the Free State Traffic Department and officers from Lejweleputswa‚ Moqhaka and Motheo municipalities conducted operations at the weigh bridges‚ the Henneman crossing and along the N1.
“This integrated approach to law enforcement was informed by the realisation that too many crashes are occurring on the roads due to acts of lawlessness by road users,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.
More than 1000 vehicles were stopped and checked which saw a total of 85 traffic violations fines - including driving without license, babies not strapped in child seats, and unroadworthy vehicles – being issued.
Female officers led by the NTP have stopped 3 421 vehicles in various operations throughout the country since the start of August. Three arrests were made and 48 unroadworthy vehicles were discontinued.
The Chief of the National Traffic Police Ntsiki Jolingana has promised that “women will vigorously embark on law enforcement activities even beyond Women’s Month, sending a clear message that lawlessness can never be tolerated on our roads, not only in August but 365 days of the year”.
“It is women who bear the brunt of road carnage in an event a breadwinner, or even their own children are killed in road crashes,” Jolingana said.-SAnews.gov.za
