Pretoria- Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer has expressed satisfaction on the achievement of her province as a top performer in the 2015 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examination results.

The Western Cape became the overall top achiever with a pass rate of 84.7 per cent, up from 82.2 per cent in 2014, showing an improvement of 2.5 per cent.

The province had 53 721 candidates in total, out of which 22 739 are Bachelor passes.

MEC Schafer spoke on Tuesday after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the results in Midrand,  Johannesburg.

“I feel ecstatic, coming from position four in 2014 to one in 2015. We are very happy to have achieved this without compromising our standard of good quality. It took a lot of hard work and giving support to our learners,” said the MEC.

She said for many years the province has been concerned about the inconsistency in the marking process, and was happy that UMALUSI noticed that their concerns were valid and worked to improve on that.

The Western Cape was followed by Gauteng with 84.2 per cent, and Free State came third with 81.6 per cent.

Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe said he was happy with the results as the province was against many odds.

“We had many progressed learners. We are a big province and have a small budget, but generally we did very well. I am very happy,” said the MEC. The province was still in third position in 2014.-SANews.gov.za
