Pretoria – Registration at various universities is going smoothly as the institutions welcome new and returning students for the 2017 academic year.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) said registration is going full steam ahead and the institution has achieved a significant milestone with over 25% of all students having completed the necessary formalities in the 10 days since the process started.

Professor Kinta Burger, who is the Registrar at UJ, said by early morning on Wednesday, the university had registered over 13 000 students, which is close to one quarter of the entire student body. This is in line with the pace of registration in previous years.

Burger said the numbers are a clear indication that the university’s community wants the academic year to get underway on time and without disruptions.

She said the numbers also confirm that the “online-only” registration system is working smoothly and has been embraced by UJ students.

“UJ’s online registration system and chat facility, plus the call centre, dealing with personal enquiries and giving guidance to students, are all contributing to make the 2017 registration process as effortless and seamless as possible.

“The call centre handled more than 85 000 calls and the UJ mobisite dealt with 89 818 queries and closed on 13 January 2017,” said Burger.

Registration at UJ can be accessed 24/7 online. Anyone needing assistance is also welcome to call the UJ Call Centre on 011 559 4555.

At Durban University of Technology (DUT), registration processes kicked off smoothly as thousands of students reported for registration, which started on 16 January 2017.

DUT Deputy Registrar, Dr Thiru Pillay, said while the university received 84 855 applications for its 2017 first-year intake, it has approximately 7 000 spaces in this regard.

Pillay urged students who received notification of registration to adhere to the registration dates, warning that non-compliance can result in students losing their spaces in programmes.

Registration at the university will end on 4 February 2017.

Thanks to “Self-Help”, the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark Campus had a smooth registration processes, which commenced on 9 January 2017.

The university said since launching the self-help registration process last year, the 2017 registration process was made easy for all students and almost everything they needed to do was done under one roof, eliminating a lot of glitches. – SAnews.gov.za
