Tributes for victims of Meyersdal house collapse

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Pretoria – The Gauteng MEC for Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo, has extended his condolences to the families of the seven people who died when a house collapsed in Meyersdal, south of Johannesburg.

Media reports say a big slab of concrete on the upper level of the house, which was under construction at an upmarket estate, collapsed, causing the ground floor structure to give in under its weight.

MEC Mamabolo has also wished two hospitalised people, who were injured in the incident, a speedy recovery.

“It is a very sad tragedy to lose so many lives under such horrific circumstances. Just recently, we witnessed a number of people die when a building collapsed at the old power station in Soweto…” he said.

Emergency and rescue workers continued their inspection and work on the site since this morning in an attempt to find more suspected victims under the rubble.

Even though the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be established, MEC Mamabolo urged builders and construction workers to strictly comply with safety regulations in order to prevent the loss of lives. - SAnews.gov.za
