Terror alert: No need to panic - Minister

Monday, June 6, 2016

Pretoria - The security services will continue to work on matters of violent extremism and terrorism and ensure the safety of all citizens and residents, says State Security Minister David Mahlobo.

“We remain a strong and stable democratic country and there is no immediate danger posed by the alert,” the Minister said on Monday.

The Minister was responding to a terror alert issued by the US government at the weekend which warned its citizens in South Africa about possible terror attacks by Islamic militants targeting shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The alerts are part of the US government's standard precautionary communication to its residents.

Minister Mahlobo said the security services of the country have liaised with the Americans on the concerns they have and these engagements will continue as part of the ongoing work. – SAnews.gov.za
