Taxis urged to register for e-tolls exemption

Pretoria - Taxi operators in Gauteng must register their vehicles to be exempt from paying e-tolls, says the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral).

This comes after the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) raised concerns regarding exemptions.

“Sanral would like to inform members of the NTA that if there are any new taxis issued with operating licences by the Gauteng Provincial Government that are not yet exempted, they should register these taxis with Sanral in order to be exempted,” said the agency in a statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sanral has also acknowledged Cosatu’s right to protest against e-tolls.

Earlier this week, Cosatu called on motorists to carry on using the province’s highways without paying their e-toll bills.

“Everyone has the right to protest as enshrined in the South African Constitution, as long as this protest is done within the guidelines of the law,” said Sanral’s communications manager Vusi Mona. - SAnews.gov.za
