Stop killing councillors, Cabinet pleads

Friday, September 15, 2017

Government’s top brass has strongly condemned the attacks on and killing of councillors in some provinces.

Cabinet on Thursday extended its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those murdered.

“This goes against the ethos of the Constitution and detracts from our developmental democracy and the right of people to elect their public representatives,” Cabinet said in a statement.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been several deaths in KwaZulu-Natal and recently, deaths have also been reported in the Eastern Cape.

“This violence has taken the lives young activists, including the fearless former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Secretary General Sindiso Magaqa, who still had much to contribute to building a prosperous South Africa.

“We call on political parties to promote tolerance amongst their members and call on communities to support the South African Police Service in their investigations,” Cabinet said. – SAnews.gov.za
