Stop disrupting schools: Gauteng Education

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Pretoria - The Gauteng Education Department has appealed to communities of Riverlea and Daveyton not to disrupt schooling in those areas.

This comes after the department has noted that there has been no schooling following protest action in those areas. Riverlea and Daveyton residents are protesting against service delivery.

Protesting residents of Daveyton, on Gauteng's East Rand, say they are tired of their councillor not taking their demands seriously.

“It is of extreme concern to us, that when communities engage in protest actions, schools become targets resulting in learners losing valuable time,” said departmental spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane.

Sekhonyane said the department is currently in the process of pursuing engagements with local structures with the aim of reaching an agreement to prevent further disruption of schooling in those areas.

“At this stage we would like to make an appeal to community leaders to assist the department in stabilising schools in the areas and ensure that the future of young learners is not placed in jeopardy.

“We will continue to closely monitor the situation and hope that the community and relevant authorities will speedily resolve the unrest to normalise the situation and bring an end to the disruption of schooling,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za
