Pretoria – The stage is set for the 2015 Tshivenda Music Awards (TSHIMA), which is aimed at inspiring artists, song writers, producers and composers to continue to preserve and promote Tshivenda culture and language through music.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi is set to deliver a keynote address at the TSHIMA at the University of Venda, Limpopo, on Saturday.

“We know that Vhavenda had a rich and unique musical tradition long before the arrival of our former colonisers, therefore, it is a fact that music was present at every stage of our ancestral lives.

“Music is a powerful communication tool that causes people to share their emotions, laugh, cry, think and question, now as government, we view the TSHIMA awards as a relevant platform that will not only preserve Tshivenda traditional music, but it is also a marketing platform to reach wider audiences,” she said.

The aim of the awards is to recognise, promote and reward artists who pride themselves by singing in Tshivenda language as another way of preserving culture and heritage.

The awards are funded by the National Lottery Board, Matsila Development Trust and Rodibrite with a cash injection of R5.5 million. - SAnews.go.za
