Spotlight on transformation in accommodation sector

Monday, July 25, 2016

Pretoria – Officials from the Department of Labour and the Commission for Employment Equity (CEE) will meet representatives of the catering and accommodation sectors on Tuesday to thrash out issues related to employment equity.

The engagement is part of a series held by the department with business leaders of various sectors to check the progress being made in transforming workplaces. This follows the launch of the 16th CEE Annual Report, which identified that there is a slow pace in workplace transformation in South Africa.

The aim of the sectoral engagements is to consult business leaders on the challenges they face in implementing employment equity and finding workable solutions.

The Commission for Employment Equity is a statutory body established in terms of Section 28 of the Employment Equity (EE) Act. Its role is to advise the Labour Minister on any matter concerning the act, including policy and matters pertaining to the implementation of the EE Act.

The catering and accommodation sectors engagement will be held at Saint George’s Hotel in Irene, Gauteng. The session will start at 9am and end at 1pm.

The ongoing series of dialogues started on 23 June 2016 with the retail and motor sectors. Engagements have also been held with the manufacturing and finance sectors.

The next engagement with the construction sector is planned for 11 August at the Southern Sun O.R Tambo Airport, Kempton Park. More engagements are planned to be held with the transport sector, educational institutions, the National Skills Authority, Department of Higher Education and local government.

All engagements will include the Sector Education & Training Authority (SETA) and trade unions operating in that sector.

Nine of the 10 engagements will be held in Gauteng, with the exception of one that will be held with the wholesale sector in September in Cape Town.

The venues of the other engagements will be confirmed in due course. – SAnews.gov.za
