The Department of Sport and Recreation has received its fourth clean audit in row.
Sport and Recreation Minister Thulas Nxesi said he is happy with the way the department has spent its allocated funds.
“This serves as an indication that there is cohesion in the department when it comes to utilising government funds. It speaks of proper processes … being followed and accountability,” said the Minister at the presentation of the clean audit award on Thursday in Cape Town.
Adding to the Minister’s comments, Deputy Minister Gert Oosthuizen said the award talks to the leadership and collective commitment of the department to deliver on its mandate.
“This demonstrates that we really stretch the rand and we ensure that we deliver for our people. The importance of a clean audit speaks volumes of good governance, something that we urge the people of this country not to get tired of requesting other government departments from achieving such. I am extremely proud of what we have achieved,” said the Deputy Minister.
At the presentation, Lourens van Vuuren of the office of the Auditor General, said receiving a clean audit is no easy task. Speaking on behalf of Auditor General Kimi Makwetu, Van Vuuren said recognition should be granted to all departments that ensure they obtain clean audits.
“It is very important that senior managers ensure that proper processes are followed when working with their internal supply chain. The chief financial officers in all government entities deserves a pat on the back because the buck stops with them, with reference to checks and balances in ensuring that there is financial accountability by all,” said Van Vuuren.
The office of the Auditor General said proper procurement processes need to be followed as this plays a major role in determining if a department receives a clean audit.
It further pressed on the importance of performance information, saying that quarterly performance audits should be conducted by departments. – SAnews.gov.za
