Spelling Bee competition to improve learners' vocab

Thursday, April 16, 2015

Pretoria - As part of a broader comprehensive strategy to address the poor performance by learners in languages and numeracy, the Department of Basic Education, in partnership with Spell It South Africa, will today launch the Spelling Bee South Africa Competition for 2015.

The Annual National Assessments (ANA) results have in the past reflected poor learner comprehension and performance, not only in language, but also in numeracy and Mathematics.

Spelling Bee South Africa contributes to learners’ ability to read and write competently, said the Department of Basic Education

“The overall objective of the competition is to stimulate an interest amongst learners in learning languages and other subjects that will broaden their horizons.”

The Spelling Bee concept originated  many years ago in the United States of America and is about the glory of being able to overcome the complexities of words that makes one a champion speller. – SAnews.gov.za
