Shaw to head up Broadband Infacro

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Pretoria - Dr Andrew Shaw has been appointed as the interim CEO of telecommunication infrastructure provider, Broadband Infacro, the Department of Public Enterprises said on Tuesday.

Minister Malusi Gigaba seconded Shaw's appointment following the resignation of Dave Smith as CEO, who resigned in February.

Shaw's appointment will allow enough time for the board of Infacro to recruit a new CEO of the state owned company.

With respect to media reports alleging that an audit found irregularities at Infacro, the department said: "The minister has noted the breaches mentioned in the internal audit report and takes a dim view of the lack of systems and apparent lapse in leadership by the board and management in critical moments."

Shaw is the Deputy Director-General of Transport at Public Enterprises. He was acting director-general from March 2010 to January 2011.

He holds a BSc and MSc (Engineering) from the University of the Witwatersrand and a PhD in Transport Economics from the University of Leeds. He also holds an MBA.

Shaw will be responsible, among others, for ensuring that the company complies with the remedial actions proposed in its recent internal audit report, as well as supervising and overseeing disciplinary actions against those that were mentioned in the report.

He will also supervise a forensic investigation into the affairs of the company.

"In addition, the department will be submitting its recommendations to Cabinet for the filling of the vacant positions to strengthen the board of Broadband Infraco, and an announcement will be made in due course," said department spokesperson Ayanda Shezi.
