Pretoria - Life will never be the same for a family of 13 in Madibe-a-Makgabana village near Mahikeng.

North West MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Collen Maine handed over a three-bedroomed house to the family during the provincial government’s service delivery programme known as Setsokotsane.

Before the department’s intervention, Boitumelo Moteu (43), who is unemployed and also expectant, had been staying with her mother, siblings, husband and their children in a dilapidated shack.

Moteu relies on her husband’s meagre salary, which he gets by working at a nearby farm that produces peanuts.

The Moteus’ living conditions came to light on Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July. MEC Maine made a commitment to mobilise resources to help the family by building them a decent house.

The house was built with the new specifications, which stipulate that the minimum floor area of the house must be 45m2. The house must have two bedrooms, kitchen with sink, living/dining area, bath, hand basin and a toilet. The house must be face brick with a smooth internal floor finish.

The house must also have basic electrical installation comprising at least one light in each room, two lights in the combined kitchen/living area, electrical plug in each bedroom and two plugs in the kitchen/living room. All internal and external doors must be installed. The roof must have Chromadek sheeting with a minimum thickness of 0.5mm.

Meanwhile, the residents of Logageng in rural Ratlou Local Municipality are to benefit from a housing project worth over R21 million, which is set to be completed by March next year. – SAnews.gov.za
