Schabir Shaik behind bars again

Pretoria - Schabir Shaik has been re-incarcerated at a KwaZulu-Natal prison, the Department of Correctional Services has confirmed.

Correctional Services spokesperson Sonwabo Mbananga said Shaik was "re-incarcerated" on Monday and would remain at the Durban Westville Prison for 72 hours.

Given the "frequency of the alleged incidents of possible parole violations" by Shaik, the department decided he should be re-incarcerated while investigations into the alleged incidents were concluded, Mbananga added.

Shaik has been accused of assaulting a journalist on a Durban golf course last month. He is also alleged to have assaulted a man outside a mosque on Friday.

He will appear before the Parole Board at the end of the 72 hours, when the investigations are also expected to be completed.

It will be up to the Parole Board to decide what action, if any, should be taken against Shaik, Mbananga said.

Shaik, who was convicted of fraud, was released on medical parole in 2009. He had served 28 months of a 15-year jail term for fraud and corruption.
