SARS advisory committee announced

Pretoria - Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene has announced the members of the advisory committee that has been set up to attend to governance matters at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

This follows the Minister’s announcement in February that he would appoint an advisory committee, to be chaired by retired Judge Frank Kroon, to advise him and the SARS Commissioner on a number of strategic and governance matters relating to SARS.

“The Minister presented the names of the committee members he appointed to Cabinet for noting. The committee will be appointed for a period of one year and will begin its work immediately,” said the Ministry of Finance on Thursday.

The Members of the Advisory Committee are:

Judge Frank Kroon

Judge Frank Kroon is a retired Judge of the High Court of South Africa. He was appointed as Judge in 1985, having practiced as an advocate from 1964 to 1983. He has served as an acting judge in the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Labour Appeal Court.  He retired from the bench in 2011.

Advocate Selby Mfanelo Mbenenge

Mbenenge was admitted as an advocate in 1989 and has extensive experience that includes serving as a Public Prosecutor and State Law Advisor. He has also acted as a judge in the High Court and in the Labour Court.

Mmakgolo Meta Maponya

Maponya is a qualified Chartered Accountant. She has extensive experience in public sector finance gained through advising, among others, the Department of Environmental Affairs, the Social Housing Regulatory Agency, and Limpopo Housing. She also has investment banking experience gained at Investec Corporate Finance.

Lazarus Docter Mokoena

Mokoena is currently a Managing Director of Actuarial and Consulting Solutions & Public Sector Divisions at Alexander Forbes Financial Services Holdings.

Prior to joining Alexander Forbes Financial Services, Mokoena was the Chief Executive and Principal Officer of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund, where he had overall responsibility and accountability for Eskom’s in-house Retirement Fund Administration operations.

Rudolph Mastenbroek

Mastenbroek is currently an advocate with 20 years of experience in the public service and academia. He spent eight years at SARS between 2005 and 2013, which included a 30-month secondment to the National Prosecuting Authority, where he was a member of the presidentially established Anti-Corruption Task Team. He had previously worked for the NPA for six years.

Jonas Makwakwa

Makwakwa is currently the Group Executive responsible for Audit at SARS and the Acting Chief Operations Officer. He joined SARS in 1995 as an auditor after completing his junior degree (B Com Accounting).

Matsobane Matlwa

Matlwa is currently Chief Financial Officer at SARS, a position he assumed in December 2014. He was previously the CEO of Matlwa Consulting, a management consultancy he founded.

The primary task of the advisory committee will be to guide the direction of long-term strategy at SARS by ensuring that decisions about SARS operations, personnel, budget and technology support its long-term strategy and plans. – SAnews.gov.za
