Skukuza - Rangers of the Kruger National Park (KNP) took centre stage this morning as South African National Parks (SANParks) celebrated International Ranger Day at the KNP.

The event was held to honour and commemorate the work done by rangers against difficult terrains and often risking their lives to protect animals and the wildlife.

The event was held for the seventh time in honour of rangers who have lost their lives in the battle against poachers and other environmental crimes.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Barbara Thompson said it is important that rangers are honoured because they do a difficult job, often putting their lives in danger.

“We want to tell you that we understand and fully appreciate that rhino poaching goes much deeper than mere physical security. Social and economic problems such as unemployment and poverty are part of the problem.”

She added that a multi-dimensional approach is needed to deal with the scourge of rhino poaching and government will support rangers as the fight continues.

“They still continue to soldier on often facing sophisticated and well-armed poachers and as government we will continue to support them with basic gear to battle the scourge of rhino poaching.”

South Africa holds 80 percent of the rhino population on the African continent. Since the beginning of the year, South Africa has lost 618 rhinos with the KNP the hardest hit with over 400 rhinos poached. Limpopo has lost 82, North West 24 and KwaZulu-Natal 52. A total of 172 poachers have been arrested.

The deputy minister also unveiled a ranger monument outside the Paul Kruger gate. The monument comprises parts of a Leadwood tree which symbolises longevity.

“The rangers of the KNP like the Leadwood tree have survived for more than 100 years. Through their strength, their hardships and resilience and dangers they face on a daily basis, the rangers will survive and continue to stand tall,” she said.

Meanwhile, a poacher was arrested this morning closer to the Paul Kruger, carrying a rifle, ammunition and an axe. “We would like to applaud our rangers for doing a good job in assisting in the arrest of the poacher this morning,” said SANParks Board Chairperson Kuseni Dlamini. – SAnews.gov.za
