Pretoria – Survivors of road accidents will benefit from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and South African Local Government Association (Salga) in Pretoria on Friday.

The MoU is expected to, among other things enhance local government’s capacity to provide emergency services and post-crash responses and bring RAF services close to the people.

The partnership will also promote road safety and education through the local sphere of governance; improve the distribution of the RAF information and enhance the capacity of the local government’s front offices.

The new partnership will focus on positioning municipalities as repositories for information and the promotion of road safety education.

Speaking before the signing of the agreement, RAF CEO Dr Eugen Watson said the MoU on cooperation will expand the fund’s footprint through all the established Salga platforms in local government across the country.

“Through this relationship, our citizens will no longer travel long distances to access our services, as they will now be able to get RAF services at their doorsteps.”

Salga CEO, Xolile George, said the association was looking forward to a “formidable and effective partnership that will ensure that a better life for all becomes a reality because we’ve a caring local government”.

The duration of the new partnership is five years.

The two organisations will agree on the budget required to fulfil the objectives of the projects and programmes as well as the specific contributions to be made by each party to any such project and programme.
