Johannesburg - A Community Safety Plan will ensure that the fears of residents living in Eldorado Park are addressed.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety will launch the plan later today.

According to the Deputy Director of Community Policing Relations in the department, Vukile Ngxishe, the plan will deal with the improvement of services by law enforcement agencies, school safety issues, including the prevention of drug consumption at schools and also eliminate gangsterism.

"The plan has also been designed to ascertain and strengthen strategic partnerships between the community and police and also to strengthen the role of Community Policing Forums in the area," he said.

He said it will further educate community members about priority crimes such as hijacking and house or business robberies. Awareness campaigns will also be rolled out

"The plan will also deal with physical environment issues," he said, adding that there were unfinished government houses which criminals have been using to execute their criminal activities such as rape.

The plan will further create inter-relations between provincial departments to improve youth desks in departments and to ensure that youth were engaged regarding safety and security issues.

According to the department, the plan is part of the fight against crime in the province under the auspices of the Take Charge Campaign.

The campaign launched in March 2007 aims to strengthen the bonds of trust between the community and the police and also to increasing the intensity of public scrutiny of the police.

It also seeks, by engaging with individuals, families and communities, to address those issues that have a negative impact on levels of public safety and which cannot be effectively resolved through better service delivery by government departments and more effective law enforcement alone
