Pretoria – Southern African Development Community (SADC) Facilitator and South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday arrived in Maseru, ahead of scheduled consultative meetings with key stakeholders in the mountain Kingdom.

The consultative meetings, which get underway today, form part of regional efforts to consolidate peace and security in Lesotho, says the Presidency.

“The Deputy President’s visit follows the recent signing of the Maseru Facilitation Declaration and the Maseru Security Accord, which laid a basis for the resolution of the political and security challenges facing the Kingdom of Lesotho,” said the Presidency.

The Facilitator, Deputy President Ramaphosa, is expected to pay a courtesy call on His Majesty King Letsie III, hold meetings with Prime Minister Tom Thabane, Deputy Prime Minister Mothejoa Metsing, the Speaker of Lesotho's parliament Sephiri Motanyane, Deputy Speaker Adv. Lekhetho Rakuoane and the EU Ambassador Michaele Doyle.

The Presidency said the Facilitator continues to be supported in his regional facilitation efforts by a team of SADC experts and members of the SADC secretariat, led by SADC Deputy Executive Secretary Dr. Thabang Mhlongo.

“These are members from SADC states of Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa,” it said.

The Facilitator is expected to return to South Africa later on Thursday. - SAnews.gov.za
