Pretoria - The Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Susan Shabangu, has congratulated Caster Semenya for winning the 800metre qualifying heat at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

The Department of Women said the fact that Semenya has qualified for the finals in the face of great adversity is a clear demonstration of her resilience and strength of character.

The 25-year-old Semenya, who comes from Limpopo, won the heat in 1:59.31. This paves the way for her to participate in the finals on Saturday.

The Minister has wished Semenya well ahead of the finals.

She also called on Semenya to remain strong, knowing that South Africa and many other countries are behind her.

“We will always be proud of her,” said Minister Shabangu.

Minister Shabangu encouraged all those who are still participating in the Olympics to do their best for South Africa. - SAnews.gov.za
