Monday, June 29, 2015

Pretoria - The South African government has joined the international community in condemning the inhumane and senseless suicide bomb attack that took place in the Al-Sadiq Mosque, in Kuwait City.

On Friday, a suicide bomb strike on a Shiite Muslim mosque, in Kuwait, killed at least 27 people and wounded more than 200 other worshippers attending the Friday prayers.

The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said such deliberate attacks against innocent civilians are contraventions of well-established international human rights and humanitarian law, and constitute a crime against humanity.

“This inhumane attack took place during the holy month of Ramadan, a time of reflection, a time for people to come together in a spirit of social cohesion and respect,” spokesperson Clayason Monyela said.

Extending its condolences to the government and people of the State of Kuwait, Pretoria reiterated its stance that terrorism in any form and from whichever quarter cannot be condoned and South Africa stands firmly with the international community in condemning all terrorism, and these acts in particular.

“South Africa will continue to support regional and international efforts to address the scourge of terrorism in all its forms.” - SAnews.gov.za
