Report into KZN traffic dept recruitment process concluded

Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has received the report on the investigation into the recruitment process of the KwaZulu-Natal traffic department.

In December 2012, six people died from suspected dehydration after taking part in the traffic department’s recruitment fitness test.

The premier said in a statement that he had received the report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Commission of Inquiry on 1 July.

“The RTI Commission has handed over the report to me … I will study the report and I will also ensure that it is tabled before the Provincial Executive Council and acted upon.”

He said he was glad the commission had finally finished its work after delays caused by requests from commissioners who wanted to interrogate more evidence.

“As government we attached importance to thoroughness in the execution of the work of this nature. Some in other quarters used our attention to detail to create the impression that we were deliberately prolonging the anguish of the families of the victims,” said Premier Mchunu.

He said as he received the report, his thoughts were with the affected families.

“We will endeavour to ensure that they are informed of all the processes moving forward.” – SAnews.gov.za
