Release of 'jobs for cash' report postponed

Friday, May 6, 2016

Pretoria – The release of the ‘jobs for cash’ report by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has been postponed by two weeks.

This follows an agreement between the Minister and the Ministerial Task Team (MTT) to allow stakeholders to make their inputs into the report.

The task team was set up last year following reports that some teacher union members were selling principal and deputy principal posts at schools. The allegations came to light in 2014 and also implicate school governing bodies, circuit and district officials.

Earlier this week, Minister Motshekga held a number of meetings in her Pretoria office as part of the commitment to engage with stakeholders regarding the Ministerial Task Team's ‘jobs for cash’ report.

On Tuesday, the Minister had bi-lateral meetings with the National Teachers Union (NATU), the National Professional Teachers Association (NAPTOSA) and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).

On Wednesday, the engagements continued with the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwys Unie (SAOU) and the Professional Educators Union (PEU). In the afternoon, the Minister met with all school governing body associations.

Emanating from these consultation meetings with the Minister, stakeholders have requested more time to refine their inputs and responses to the report.

Stakeholder responses and inputs will be considered by the MTT and before the final report is published.

The consultation with the various stakeholders highlighted the importance of ensuring that all processes are fair, just and followed to the letter. – SAnews.gov.za
