Pretoria - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) intercepted a truck transporting illicit cigarettes worth over R500 000 at Groblers Bridge in Limpopo.

The truck was intercepted on Sunday night, following a tip-off that its driver might be involved in illegal activities.

“The driver was taken for inspection and 78 boxes and 133 loose cartons of cigarettes were found worth R560 587,” said SARS of the bust made by Customs officials.

The boxes of cigarettes were wrapped in black plastic and packed on top of a consignment of unmanufactured tobacco covered with tarpaulin.

“The male driver has been handed over to the police for possible criminal prosecution,” said SARS on Wednesday. – SAnews.gov.za
