R100 billion owed to municipalities

Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday urged government entities and the private sector to pay their debts to enable municipalities to function effectively.

He said to date, debt owed to municipalities is close to R100 billion, which is almost double the amount since 2009.

The President was speaking to media in Pretoria on the progress made by government in implementing the first year of the Medium Term Strategic Framework (MTSF) since his 2015 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February.

“We launched the Back to Basics programme in September last year to revitalise local government. In the past year, municipalities have been supported in various areas to implement the programme,” he said.

He said while municipalities have been directed to pay their debts, debt owed to municipalities is not given sufficient attention. - SAnews.gov.za
